Saints Julian and Basilissa

Valladolid, Spain

The two figures are identified as Julian and Basilissa by the photographer, who noted that they were originally above the sanctuary in the now-demolished church dedicated to those saints. Assuming the correctness of this identification one may take the figure on the left, which is taller and has a more masculine face, to be the husband Julian. He was beheaded, which may explain the gash in the neck.

However, it is possible that both figures could represent female martyrs. Neither has a beard, both have long hair, and their flowing garments are nearly identical. If so, the one on the left could be St. Lucy, who in portraits sometimes has a gash in her neck.

The right hand of the figure on the right has broken fingers. Presumably before the breakage there was a palm branch in her hand.
